Fertility Test: a Key Tool to Plan Your Maternity

Currently, the decision to become a mother has been delayed for different reasons, economic, professional, social and even health. In India, 30% of women have their first child at age 35, an age at which a woman's fertility begins to decrease; process that accelerates after 35.

Chronological age, the ideal time in life, and biological age, the time when the eggs are of best quality, do not always coincide. Women's monthly fertility reduces from 8 to 3% between 35 and 38 years of age and the percentage of sterile women after 40 can exceed 50%. This change in family planning, along with other less frequent factors, causes one in five couples of childbearing age to resort to assisted reproduction treatments.

Fortunately, we have techniques that allow us to preserve motherhood and allow women to decide the most appropriate time to become a mother.

The Ovarian Reserve:

Ovarian reserve is the number of eggs that the ovaries have at a given time. As the years go by, the quality of the eggs decreases and worsens, although there are other causes, such as ovarian surgeries, oncological treatments, endometriosis, family history or early menopause.

If a woman considers becoming a mother beyond 30, it is important to know her and make decisions based on her future plans, since if she considers becoming a mother beyond 35, it is advisable to preserve her fertility and consider vitrification of eggs.

Knowing the ovarian reserve is key to good planning, if you are not sure about early motherhood. For More Information click here for online gynecologist consultation.

How is the ovarian reserve known?

The quantity and quality of the eggs can be measured using two tests:

Blood Test: It allows determining the level of anti-Müllerian hormone, which is a very reliable indicator to know the number of eggs. It can be done at any time of the day and menstrual cycle.

Ultrasound: It allows a count of the antral follicles. This value provides indirect information about ovarian reserve. The more follicles there are, the better. It should be done in the first phase of the menstrual cycle.
