What is the Ayurvedic Treatment Panchakarma?

Today it has been three months since I followed my first Panchakarma in India and what gives me the most satisfaction from the experience is the result that I feel in myself three months later... The purpose of Panchakarma is to eliminate ' ama ' (toxins), that is, to purify ourselves, detoxify us and cleanse ourselves, not only physical toxins that hide in our body, but also cleanse our mind and our emotions, since according to Ayurveda the main benefit is energetic and mental, also helping to regulate our emotional state. Without a doubt, I believe that dedicating myself to this Ayurvedic treatment for two weeks has helped me get rid of some habits and plant new ones. Some are daily routines as simple as cleaning your tongue as soon as you wake up or drinking a glass of warm water on an empty stomach to facilitate intestinal transit, and others have to do with what diet I choose to eat and how I combine it with modern life and social commitments.

For those of you who read this blog and my posts on Instagram, you have already seen that I brought some ideas for very effective cleansing broths to maintain healthy lifestyle habits and, above all, to cultivate awareness in our diet and our lifestyle. As the famous quote says: “we are what we eat” and today I would add “we feel according to what we eat”… In fact, in Ayurveda the term “Rasa” is used to describe both flavors and emotions. How many times have we not felt the impulse to have a specific flavor? Behind that impulse there is an emotion and stopping to feel it truly helps us to listen and see what the real need is that is sometimes masked as a “craving” or “impulse”…

Today I will tell you a little more about what a ' Panchakarma ' consists of, the purification treatment of Ayurveda. It consists of five (' pancha ') cleansing actions (' karma ') for several weeks in a row, the 4 main ones being:

– Nasya (nasal cleansing using oil or medicated herbal powders)

– Vamana (controlled vomiting)

– Virechana (digestive system purging)

– Basti (enema or colonic irrigation)

The truth is that some cleanings sound much worse than they really are. In my case, given my constitution (prakriti), the Ayurvedic doctor recommended nasya , virechana and basti . Curiously, of all the vamana   (controlled vomiting) I was the one I least wanted to experience. The virechana purge was much more pleasant and moderate than I imagined and the enemas with herbal oils ( basti ) were not at all uncomfortable. Like everything, I think that feeling that you are in the hands of expert people and that the place is clean and hygienic allows you to trust without worrying.

Preparation for Panchakarma cleansing consists of a special vegetarian diet for your dosha (constitution ~ prakruti ) as well as between 2 and 3 hours a day of Snehana (body wave with massage based on different oils), Sirodhara (fluid body wave). head) and Swehana (heat therapy sometimes based on pindas with rice milk or oils or like this 55 degree steam bath in which I laughed, cried, prayed and almost threatened my dear therapist Shanu with whom I have so much contact. laughed and enjoyed).

From my solo trip this past September and my Panchakarma, I am left with the special connection that you ultimately create with your therapists. In India it is common for your therapists to be of the same sex. My therapist for the two weeks was Shanu. She had already met him on the previous trip I made to South India in December 2023. I think the trust that is created when the same person treats you is important. Shanu is a serious therapist and at the same time happy and talkative. There you can see him smiling as always!

This type of treatment is highly recommended for yogis and committed meditators who want to deepen the experience and practical experience of Ayurveda. This may be the time for you to join this Yoga and Ayurveda Retreat, also combining conscious tourism in Kerala and South India.
